Basic Guidelines for Best Practice with children

There is no substitute for COMMUNICATION. Don't say things like "Susie knows more about computers than I do...."

Never give out PRIVATE Information on the web.

Establish clear RULES while students are on the computer/internet. Do what teachers do --- Write a contract and have ALL users sign it.

Location, Location, Location. Keep all computers where screens are very public!.

No Peer2Peer, NewsGroups, Usenet, CHAT, No Instant Messaging, No Face Book, No MySpace. Social networking sites may not be appropriate for K-4.

Use your on-line provider's special security controls. For example Comcast has a parental control panel. Use these controls.

Sites that will help me and my kids! What about cell phones? Many now offer photograph options and texting -- so I would be very careful. Twitter?! What's that about?

Sites we use at school with your children to teach them basic technology vocabulary and skills.

Privacy Playground is an acclaimed site out of Canada that has a fun way teaching kids. The Three CyberPigs, (just click on it to start the game) help young kids get the idea about privacy on the Internet! Cybersence and Nonesense is appropriate for precocious kids or kids from 4th grade up.!
