constitution. Your child is expected to know and understand these
things by the state --

1st Grade
-
Recognizes the
Constitution as the basis for law in our country. This would be a
good time to help your child understand what the word law
means.
2nd Grade -
- Understands the
rights and responsibilities and privileges of citizens living in a
democratic republic.
- Compares functions
of city and state governments.
- Identifies ways
state governmental officials are selected.
This would be a great
time to talk about how important it is to vote and that it is even
more important to learn about the issues so that we can make good
choices about our laws. How are our state officials selected? Who can
vote for them? Why do we need state governments if we have a federal
government?
3rd Grade -
- Recognizes the
Constitution as the basis of the United States Governmental
structure and laws.
- Describes the
varied basic structures of governments at the local, state and
national levels (executive, legislative, and
judicial).
- Describes the
functions of the three branches of government.
4th Grade
-
4th grade builds on all
these concepts with the addition of history! They will actually study
the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods of our history.
Specifically a 4th
grader should be able to analyze the impact of the Constitution both
in principal and in practice. If you help them learn the Preamble and
the Bill of Rights they have knocked out two of four of the major
requirements!
- Purpose of the U.S.
Constitution as identified in the PREAMBLE!!!!
- Identifies the
three branches of Government (federal and state)
- Explains how one
branch of government can limit the power of others by using a
chart depicting checks and balances
- Bill of
Rights.
